Office of Selection

The Corporation

Apes Perpetual Expansion & Selection holds the register of licensed operators and the concessions they work. It began as a list, and it is still a list.

A note on the name

The Corporation was founded as the Apes Periastral Exploitation Syndicate. Following the Consolidation, the Syndicate adopted its present name. The initialism was unaffected, and the stationery had already been printed. Documents bearing the former name remain valid for purposes of identification, and for no other purpose.

Institutional history

  1. The filing cabinet

A placement bureau for hazardous work, on Terra. Its founding asset was a list: names, and that to which each of them would agree.

  2. The concessions

When the orbital claims were awarded, they went not to the richest bidder but to the only organisation able to name a hundred thousand people willing to go. Expansion came second. Selection is what the Corporation is.

  3. The Consolidation

Independent haulers were brought into alignment. Equipment transferred; permits stayed. The word acquisition appears nowhere in the record.

  4. The Class G reform

The Corporation abolished not the workers but the category. Every operator became an Independent Operator, Class G. Liability became a rounding error. Wages became yield share.

  5. Selection

Selection required a metric, and a metric requires an exercise. The Selection Trial is the Corporation’s assessment instrument: an assessment that operators attend at their own expense, and at which admission is charged.

The Offices

Office of Selection

The Company Seal

The Company Seal is pressed on every document the Corporation issues. A license without a live seal is a souvenir. The seals in current use are published in the Seal Registry, where any concession may verify an impression without applying to the Corporation.
